Where Were the Women?

by Criminy Pickett

On a tarmac in Kabul

Loading the plane ‘til it was full

A sight forlorn and pitiful

Where were the women that day?

For on the plane, vast majority men

Hundreds more males running along with them

Women thus cancelled and forsaken

Where were the women that day?

Deserted, abandoned, and left behind

While the men ran off and made a beeline

“They’re lesser valued, and surely won’t mind!”

Where were the women that day?

So how does a “country” move forward now

While half the population it disavows

Lip-service to human rights it kowtows

Where is Zarifa today?
